Analysis is the heart of the inquiry... Module Two Skype sessions

Today we set ourselves the question what if we could NOT interview or observe or give out questionnaires ... (in other words what if we didn't generate new data but instead looked at what is already out there. What would happen?

This made us have to think about what we would do with this (non-interview) data - i.e. think about the analysis process for your inquiry. The analysis makes meaning of the data. It is easier to work out what your analysis would be when you cut out the idea you will just go and ask people what they think. This is because when you interview people you are tempted to just take their answer as THE ANSWER to your inquiry. Whereas if you start to think about what is already out there to find out about you can more easily see how you are going to need to compare things, look for themes and see differences and similarities across the different data, which is the analysis.

For instance we said:
If your inquiry was about mental health and auditions. You could ask people what they feel about auditions but what are you going to do with that?
Or ....add the idea you can't talk to people.... what would you research...
Your own journal, book, and articles on auditions and look to see if the same things come up (themes), look at the Hustle and look at the comments, go to other professional job posts and compare the comments there, look at the advertisement around the audition info pages (which are often for jobs where people are assuming you are not going to get an audition job. Like tela- marketing advertising opportunities next to the dance audition). Thinking about the impact this might have, thinking about why they advertise here. See your inquiry as a way to better understand the culture and the history of the topic you are interested in. This is like using your BA to build a foundation of knowledge - rather than just generating new data through asking someone what they think...

The analysis is the heart of the inquiry.
The analysis is not just telling us what people said...

Have a go at taking the interviews etc...out of your inquiry plan and push yourself to think about what is out there that you can use as resources and what you would do with it. It is usually a much more interesting inquiry that comes out.

MORE (Module Two)

News about Module Two on-line ethics form:
1.  a draft is due in week 9 (in a couple of weeks). The draft is so your Supervisor can give you feedback on the form. Your feedback should help you with the form and also with the design of your inquiry. The form is finally submitted at the same time as all your other work in December.

2. When you go to the MORE folder of the our BAPP Programme Page, the folder opens to a lot of information. To start make sure you read:
section 1
section 2 (go to Arts and Creative Industries section)
4. Templates - consent forms etc
You can read the rest but start with these key sections.

3. Once you start the form make sure you name your project and include "(BAPP)" at the end of the Project name.

4. Make sure you put your Supervisor's name and email in the Supervisor section. That way we have access to give comments and feedback on the form for you.

5. When we give you comments and feedback on the form it comes back to you as 'rejected' (it is not rejected!!!). This just means it is not submitted, which is fine because we don't do the final submission until December.

Thinking and considering ethical reflections helps you shape your inquiry as well as gives depth to your inquiry. Here is a video that I think is a warning about not thinking deeply enough in the design of a research project and coming up with questionable and un-informed conclusions as a result of bad design!!
Its ok its Onion News...

Exploring your practice through ethical questions: ethical considerations

Thinking about ethical questions leads to different ways to better understand your practice. Exploring these ethical considerations leads to ‘big’ questions within your practice – such as questions about gender, rights, cultures.

Here is a talk where Trevor Copp and Jeff Fox talk about their practice. Questioning their practice and their experiences led them to questions about gender and identity.

Your art form tells the story (or the text) of the principles of the society from which it has developed. Concepts for things such as gender, power, age, relationship with community emerge in the practices of any group of people.

Watch this ted talk by Trevor Copp & Jeff Fox that talks about the assumed principles behind their dance form. The point of watching this video is to recognise that our practices reflects the cultural values of a society at a particular time and place it stems from.

Think of questions you can ask when you watch something from the field of your practice that will help you be more aware of the nuances of the culture and history with in your practice.  You may not be sensitive to thinking about these questions because you come from the same perspective as the mainstream expectations of your art form. You assume what things mean. As you engage with the ideas of ethical questions you can see that what we assume about other people has more to do with us than it does with them! This is significant for planning your inquiry (in ACI3622 Module Two) and analysing your data (in ACI3633 Module Three). In some ways, you need to be able to observe yourself noticing the situations the inquiry creates.
What 'big' questions are you coming across?
Please comment or post addresses to post where you discuss this...
