Module Two On-line session (good and healthy for all moduler!!!)

Today we had a module Two on-line session.
We talked about
The importance of finding a topic to start working with. In the handbook this is written as finding a question but what we mean is an area you are interested in. Through the module you will be shaping and molding. Finding an area is like getting your lump of marble and then you will be shaping and molding the area/marble by using different tools such as shaping it through looking at research methods you will use, shaping it by looking at the ethical issues you will consider, shaping it by looking at what other people have said (the literature review). Commit to some marble/an area of interest so you can start to look at how you can design the inquiry. If it is not quite right you will find in shaping it it will start to be clearer and take a form that works for you.

Now you have committed to an area you need to do a literature review. That is map the ideas other people have had around your topic. You want to find out what you don’t know you don’t know about your topic.
That does not mean read every single book but know the areas of interest other people have had when they looked at your topic. For instance if you are interested in finding out more about choreography because you find at work you have been asked if you want to choreograph a piece, areas to do a literature review might include finding out:

  • About what choreographers say about their own process and work.
  • About what other people have said about working with choreographers – looking at other people’s processes.
  • Looking at the way people have chosen to document their choreography
  • About what kinds of choreography are there.
  • About what people say choreography is.
  • About the kinds of people who choreograph – they are not all dance trained

These are all areas of the literature that have many books within them but finding out a little about what is thought in that area will help you map more about your topic and also help you see where your own interest lies. Lastly it will help you find out things about the topic you had not thought about which will help shape your inquiry. We also pointed out this is most important because in Module three you need to analyse the inquiry data and activity and if you don’t know much about your topic you can not analyse it to any depth.

Other sources are:
  1. Can you find a specialist journal on choreography and what sort of discussions are published in that?
  2. Are there any videos about choreography?

Lastly you need to look at literature about how people have researched and designed research in your field of interest. Researching in the field of choreography is different than researching in geography or microbs. You need to know how designs for research in your field have been carried out and what you feel would work for you in your Professional Practice. You need explain how choreography research is different from xxxx

You can use the University Library as a great source of info. You can use Summon to gather a really good range of articles. DO not just google use Google Scholar, try not to ‘just come across something’ work out what the schools of thought are how many people think a thing is what your reading old school or a new idea in the field?

All of this is helping you shape the direction you want to go in.

As you do this keep notes on Ethics – things people describe as things to reflect on or even as problems. Notice what you question and where you have problems with what people have said or done or even how much a problem finding something is. Is there a lot of information about Male European choreographers but not much on West Indian women choreographers for instance? How will affect your inquiry.

The people at the on-line session are also posting on what they found helpful or interesting please visit and comment.

Tuesday is the next First Tuesday Group Skype hope to hear what you are doing then.

Module Two (past and present)

We have a Module Two group chat on Friday February 26th at noon (in London time).

Please indicate in the comments below if you want to join in (past or present).

So Module Two hummmmmm - things to think about:
1. - what is the main thing YOU want to learn from Module Two for your self for your practice? I mean we all want you to pass - you do and the university does. So beyond "I want to pass" what do you want to get out of this term? Having read the handbook what do you think you will be doing - how do you make sure you are not just jumping through hoops because it says do this or that in the handbook? What is the point for you?

All the modules are designed to be purposeful for you as a person who is part of a professional practice. It should make sense beyond just doing things to get a BA.

2. What have you found yourself thinking about, wondering about, day dreaming about recently?

3. What are things you want to develop having received your feedback from the last Module you did?

On Friday we will be talking about the purpose of the Module as it sits following Module One activity and prior to the Module Three inquiry. We will be talking about mapping the module for yourself so that you start to have clear goals for yourself not just the ones you read in the handbook.
Speak to you Friday
What do you think? - past Module Twos please comment below too.

First Tuesday skype thoughts

AM & PM BAPP chats
Tuesday December 1st we had our first Tuesday Skype chats.

We talked about a number of things and the people who joined in the chats are also posting about points they found interesting and/or helpful.

Here is a Review – like a literature Review (this is an overview of everything = review).

AM
We talked about referencing and bibliography – we said the bibliography on a book we read is often like a pathway. It helps us look up where the authors ideas came from and can also direct you to other printed texts about the subject you are reading about.
Your bibliography is for the same thing. It shows where your ideas have come from – and makes sure you give credit to those people whose ideas have influenced you or your work. It is vital to your work and should be built as you work Not something you add on at the end. Bethany and Peter will post thoughts on this
See comments below for peters blog address

The appendix is different for the bibliography. Ask yourself where else you know that word. If you have a problem with your appendix (appendicitis) you have an operation to have it cut out!!! That means you can survive without an appendix. It is something that could be there or could be missed out. It is not a way to get to say what you want to say but avoid the word count! Jess and Kayleigh will post thoughts on this

We talked about a Literature Review – how it is a review – an overview of all the aspects of the literature (which is hundreds of books, papers, essays etc…). So you can describe the different ways other people have looked at the subject. It is not about too detailed a report about just one book or paper!!! Lara will post thoughts on this

We talked about the ethics form. The’ tick box ethics form’ is to show you have thought about all the ethical implications of what you are doing. If you are not sure you can completely explain what you are doing by answering ‘yes’ or ‘no’ use the space for explanation to give a short explanation to answer the question. You can also choose n/a if the question does not seem to apply to your project and again give an explanation of why it is not applicable.

Tip: the bit that asks ‘Have you given consent forms to participants – really means ‘will you’ or ‘have you planned to’. We know you have not started yet so you can’t have done it but you are saying once you start you will have. Dani will post thoughts on this

PM
In the pm skype talk we covered the same types of things as above but we focused particularly on what a proposal should include. We talked about how much detail to include in the proposal. We imagined someone was asking us if they could do something in our house. What would we want to know? Things like
What makes you able to do it and why do you want to do it?
How is it going to affect other people in your house?
What are you going to do and who is going to be involved?
Why are you doing it?
Will you record my house?? Will my bedroom be on facebook!!

The proposal you are making in Module Two is the same kind of thing. You are asking the university if you can do something in the name of being a Middlesex student and the university wants to know the same kind of questions as above. So if someone was going to do something in your house there are some details you would want to know. like when and who with and what and other details that would make you question if you wanted them to do it or not. For instance:

if they gave you lots of detail on what color socks they would where but just generally said they wanted to do it in the Summer you would be a bit reluctant.

If they said I want to come in the first week of May to look at your old fashioned chimney and I will respect your house by taking my shoes off. You would feel more happy about them coming.

So think about what detail are important to better understand what you are proposing to do and what details sound like you are just waffling on in your own world.!!! Lisa and Jessica will post thoughts on this

December: OK so drafts should be flying in not to get our approval but to give you an opportunity to get feedback and consider your work with the comments of someone outside of yourself.

What do you think?
