Different situations create the BAPP Learning Environment

In his book 'Knowing Knowledge' George Seimens talks about Learning Domains
In this course, we create the situation for all four of the domains he discusses in this course. But it is the combination of the four that is the Learning Environment of BAPP. The dance, the music, the play, the yoga class are made of a combination of elements and so is the learning environment of BAPP.

Transmission Learning- The learner is brought into a system through lectures and exposed to ‘facts’.  The Unihub and Module Handbooks do this.

Emergence Learning– involves greater emphasis on the learner’s cognition and reflection. What you do with the UniHub and Handbooks and Blogs, and Skypes and conversations with your Supervisor.

Acquisition Domain– learning is exploratory and inquiry-based. This has to be self-directed (because it is your practice not anyone else’s) but self-directed does not mean alone you need to remain connected through sharing ideas (on blogs, in Skype discussions etc…). You explore this domain through looking at what you have done in the past (and writing past learning in Module One), looking at your current practice and how the course and ideas you encounter connect with it, through carrying out a project based inquiry. Sometimes you are considering all three at once (if you are in Module Three for instance).

Accretion Learning– is continuous, the learner forages for knowledge when and where it is needed – Real life and ongoing. This is shared through your blog – which is why your blog is so important to keep contributing to and why commenting on others people’s blogs is so helpful to them.

Across all this ‘relevance’is crucial to look at critically.  This returns us to thinking about what truth, deception, distraction and fact mean to you/do to you.

Lastly feedback (to each other on blogs and back and forth with your Supervisor) becomes a conversation - ongoing and not as set of instructions to get an 'A'. Go back to 'The Test'  in my blog on September 17th 2019 for John Green to explain that again...

Here is a video made about Connectivism which is the overarching idea for the network of learning domains.

Being a part of Networks of Understanding and learning: blogging and discussion

In this post I am thinking/feeling about the network of learning that is the BAPP learning community and how you find yourSelf in the network. It mirrors other networks - if you see 'networks' as a method of understanding the world.  In the new Module One handbooks (ACI3611) we discuss the networked professional and suggest looking at some videos. Below is one we suggest watching. (I thought it would be good to see for the Module Threes who did not have the new Module One handbooks in Module One.) I feel the video highlights how the blogs are a tool that help build the structure of our BAPP Learning Network / Networked understanding. This is a network you are part of.

On this course, we draw heavily from the theoretical concept of Connectivism developed differently by Steven Downes and George Siemens. Below Steven Downes talks about networks in terms that help explain why blogs and discussion groups are a part of the network of learning in BAPP ACI

In October I posted a short video of George Siemens talking about Connectivism in a way that explains why blogs are so useful in BAPP - do go back on my blog and have a look. You can use the tags or dates at the side of my blog to find the post.

Here is a video of Steven Downes talking about networks. The blogs are a part of the network of learning we are creating together. He talks about how there is  a sense of not being told what to do but that we are all contributing. This is an important principle in BAPP ACI. you can't be made to participate - it's your BA but together we can create the place where learning can happen and that is part of the work you have to do for yourself in your professional work and in your study - you have to believe (in yourself, in each other, in the idea of learning, in the idea of your art practice, in whatever it is that finds you here), believe enough to just get on with it...

Please comment on what you are thinking/feeling of this post below. It would be interesting to discuss some of the video content in our Twilight Tuesday Skype Discussion Group on February 26th or at the campus session tomorrow*.

Why blogging - being a living part of a network of information & community.

This post is a short 'bit' about the blogs and why the blogs. In the new Module One handbooks (ACI3611) we discuss the networked professional and suggest looking at some videos. Below is one we suggest watching. (I thought it would be good to see for the Module Two and Threes who have not had the new Module One handbooks.)The blog contribute to the structure of our BAPP Learning Network / Networked understanding. This is a network you are part of this term.

Module One - thoughts for all

We talked about how Module One asks you to re-think and re-feel the assumptions you have about yourself and what you do as a way to better position and recognise what your own practice is.

For instance, thinking about
modesty ‘v’ showing off
and
modesty ‘v’ generosity

When you write a cover letter to an interview modesty ‘v’ showing-off makes you feel the thing to do is ‘I would really like to work with your company’ so you don’t ‘show-off’. But thinking in terms of modesty ‘v’ generosity means you write ‘I am a trained actress … giving your credentials…’ because you are giving the people short-listing for the interview all the information they need about you. Thinking like this you might give different information then ‘showing-off’ but more information than your perception of modesty would have let you.

This stepping back and critically reflecting on your actions in terms of your practice is what Module One is asking you to do. NOT the change what you are doing but to use the tasks to look at what your practice is today.

Cycle Module One!! As ever do not think about only doing the tasks once through. Do them all and then do them again and again. Each time you engage with a deeper or different layer of your practice and task. Module one you are looking at what you already do and applying critical thinking/reflection to what it is you are doing.

The thoughts of people in the session:
Nicole is partly going to use the Module to explore her goals and better understand these goals mean to her:
‘To really get myself out there and thinking of yourself as a professional rather than a student.
Finding my purpose in what I am doing and making myself an asset to the company.
See how I can adapt myself to communicate with different people of different ages.’

Matthew D. suggests Module One has 3 lens - communication of how you position yourself in the world, what you think you need to do and why you need to do it?
Reflection: reflect on what you do and why you do it, how what you do works and how it can be improved, how could you use that process in the future
Networking: the give and take of relationships within the aspects of your life/professional life.

To not overthink what you are doing Module one is about growing as a person and developing and then looking back on where you started from.

Arghierenia says Module 1 is about your practice, you are not being asked to do something new necessarily but to look at what you do through a different perspective by using critical thinking. There are three different lenses through which we will look at our professional practices; communication, reflection and networking. It’s useful to do the tasks a few times, as the module progresses as the way you do them will change and that will help your learning and understanding of them.

We also talked about criticism ‘v’ reflection. Reflection should not start from a deficit stand point. That is, it not about what you ‘can do better’. It is about if you can see different or varied perspectives.

We about doing the tasks as a cycle also you do not have to stick to the week suggested.

The course is like the seasoning to you the meal of your life, it is not about cooking a whole new meal!

The course is about how you pull information to you meaningfully. This is difficult at first because we are often used to ‘educational’ experiences where information is pushed at you and you have to receive and memorise it! However, we are suggesting in professional settings you have to have the confidence and independence to be proactive not sit and wait for someone to tell you what to do.

Module One and Module Three group discussions

Today we had two campus sessions. Because we realise again and again the course is not about boxes, sections, tasks, modules it is a learning journey I am going to write one post for us all the read. The first group skype was for Module One’s: we asked the question
What is your Professional Practice? No, really what is it? Can you say?

It is fine if you can’t but what ever it is it is a ‘thing’ not just what you are doing at the moment.
Have a look at Victoria’s blog post http://victoriamayvickers.blogspot.com

To ask what is your Professional Practice was important in the Module Three group skype we had later because if you are starting to think about your Artefact (note: it is a bit to early to do at the moment) but when you start to think about your professional artefact you need to have a sense of what your Profession is to pin point and artefact from your profession. Think about it… Have a look at Lara’s blog post http://larafbapp.blogspot.com

In the Module One chat we them thought about who you admire in your Professional Practice – who are the people that lead the way for you in terms of where you see your practice developing? Why do those people inspire you?

Thinking about our Professional Practice, what the field is and where good practice, and inspiration lay in that field for you helps you see your professional Practice as a thing. Something you are working at and developing even when you are not getting paid for it.

The inquiry you do in Module Three is about that development – inquiring into something that you feel extends your knowledge or to bring things together or to back fill as you develop your profession.

Then I asked “if you were trying to get someone else to think about their Professional Practice what would you ask them to do to try to stimulate this?”
  • People said ask them to journal and write down ideas about their practice.
  • Someone else suggested asking if you got an injury what would you do – how would you cope – what do you need to know.
  • Someone else said get someone to do observations and give feedback to them.

Great those are the ways we chose too. We wrote Modules to try to get you to think about your professional practice: In Module One particularly we introduce those same three tools. Tools we hope you will continue to develop and use across the whole course.
  1. Journal – we ask you to look into reflection and reflective practice to think about your Practice.
  2. Ask some one what would you do – What are your resources – we talk about this as networks. What networks support you. Can you think about your Practice through thinking about the resources you draw on to Practice.
  3. Observations – well we can’t come and observe you so we ask you to observe yourself by looking at your on-line profile. How do you come a cross what do you notice about your-self and your values. Can you think about your Practice through looking at and observing yourself and how you present yourself.

So big – point now: the tasks in every module are just there to stimulate your thinking about your Professional Practice (that’s what your BA is in PP = Professional Practice. You need to have thought about Professional Practice! At some point!).
Have a look at Lauren’s blog post http://laurenhoskins92.blogspot.co.uk/

The tasks are there to help you. If one is more helpful than another spend more time on it.
Have a look at Lois-Mays Blog post http://lois-mayhunt.blogspot.co.uk

The tasks are not hoops to jump through – they are not graded. The tasks in all modules should integrate with each other and with your Professional practice.
Have a look at Caoimhe’s blog post http://norakathleenmccabe.blogspot.cpm

People who attended the chats have written blog posts. Please click on them and see what they thought and wanted to share too.

We are not looking for answers – we are looking for a deeper understanding of the questions.

What do you think? What do you feel?
Hope to talk to you during the Coffee-shop group skype chat/ First Tuesday skype chat on April 5th.
